NGC 6946: a spiral galaxy
Located in the constellation of Cygnus, NGC 6946 is a 9-g face-on spiral galaxy. In a 12-
inch telescope under very dark skies we may barely catch the glow of its center, if that;
otherwise it is completely invisible to the visual observer (too faint). Our trials of observing
it in Kennon Observatory, under campus lights, were completely unsuccessful.
Authors: John Doe, Jane Doe, students in ASTR 103 at Ole Miss.
Exposure time: a total of 6 hours, R-G-B_Hα filters, on Nov. 8 and 14, 2007.
Setup used: Meade 12” CST with Astro-Physics FR at f/5.9, SBIG ST-10 camera with a
CFW-10 filter wheel, Astrodon R-G-B-Hα filters; on a Paramount ME mount.
Original pixel size: 0.78 as, image size: 20 am × 30 am, North is up.
This galaxy is 18 million light-years from us. It is Sc type, its spiral arms are somewhat
more open than our galaxy’s, at there is no hint of a central bar.
The spiral arms are largely illuminated by bright, young, blue supergiant stars, and look
blue on the image. Notice the many red patches inside the spiral arms: these are large
molecular clouds (enhanced by our technique of inserting Hα-filtered images). They are the
locations of vigorous present-day star formation. The many stars on the picture are, in fact,
in the foreground: they are part of our galaxy.
