RGB channel to bring out the faint parts of deep-sky objects, while keeping the bright
stars still colorful. It will take much experimentation to get the best set of curves this is
a trial and error procedure. You will probably have to use several adjustment layers for
the best combination. Expect to spend a few hours and many botched trials before you
really get a good image but this is the stage when your image will become really
spectacular!
XIV. A final touch on the picture will be to crop the edges where the various
individual images got shifted off. A good trick is to add an adjustment layer with a very
strong curve, which greatly enhances the background and shows which part of the image
is “useless”. After cropping this adjustment layer can be simply made invisible.
XV. Once you are satisfied with your image, save it in PHOTOSHOP format, and also
“For the Web” (i.e. in 24-bit png). It may be a good idea at this stage, while saving in png
format, to rescale your image and reduce it to manageable file size. The original images
are somewhat oversampled; the pixel size is 0.79 as/pixel. Experience shows that a
1 as/pixel scale preserves all the detail, so a rescaling of the image size by 79% would
produce that, while cutting the file size to almost half. Still, watch out to make sure that
your final .png image is not too large a 1 Mbyte file is already very hard to handle!
You’ll be able to preview the image on the panels while saving.
XVI. Some groups will have images taken with narrow-band filters. These need to be
combined with the RGB images using PHOTOSHOP’s channel mixing and layer
composition capabilities. The best procedure differs much from case to case, depending
on which channels contains interesting information and what structures are present.
If you get stuck on one of these steps, call and ask your instructor. You may be sure you
will get help!
